What Is an Electrical Panel and Why It Matters

Your electrical panel is the main control box for your home’s power. Also called a breaker panel or load center, it sends electricity to different parts of the house.

It protects your system by shutting off power when there’s too much demand. A working electric panel reduces fire risk and supports high-energy appliances. Common types include main breaker panels, smart electrical panels, and electrical sub panels.

    FAQs - Electrical Panel Upgrades
    What is an electrical panel?
An electrical panel is the central hub that distributes power throughout your home. It manages the flow of electricity to outlets, lights, appliances, and other circuits while also providing overcurrent protection through breakers.
How do I know if my panel needs upgrading?
Signs like flickering lights, frequently tripping breakers, warm or buzzing panels, and the need for more circuits often point to an outdated or overloaded panel. These issues can lead to safety risks if not addressed.
What’s the difference between 100 amp and 200 amp panels?
A 200 amp panel can handle nearly double the electrical load of a 100 amp panel, making it better suited for today’s high-demand homes with central air, EV chargers, hot tubs, or other power-hungry devices.
Can a homeowner replace an electrical panel?
No — electrical panel replacement is complex and potentially dangerous work. It must be done by a licensed electrician who can ensure it meets local codes and safety standards.
Will my power be shut off during installation?
Yes, your power will be temporarily shut off while the new panel is being installed. In most cases, this outage lasts just a few hours and is carefully planned to minimize disruption.
Do I need a permit to upgrade my electrical panel?
Yes, most municipalities require a permit and inspection for panel upgrades. Mr. Mighty Electric handles all permitting and code compliance so you don’t have to worry about the paperwork.
How can I hide my electrical panel?
You can conceal your electrical panel with decorative solutions like a cabinet door, framed artwork, or a custom-built panel cover. Just make sure the cover allows for quick access and meets code, which typically requires at least 36 inches of clearance in front of the panel.
Where are the neutral and ground wires located in an electrical panel?
In most panels, the neutral and ground wires are connected to separate or combined bus bars along the sides of the box. During service, our licensed electricians label and organize these connections clearly to ensure safety and code compliance.
