    What Is a GFCI Outlet?

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet is designed to protect people from electric shock. It monitors the flow of electricity and shuts off power within milliseconds if it detects even a small imbalance—such as when electricity flows through water or the human body.

You can identify a GFCI outlet by its “TEST” and “RESET” buttons located between the plug slots. These outlets are required by the National Electrical Code (NEC) in any location where water and electricity are likely to meet.

Eddie Morales Jr was the electrician sent by Mr Mighty Electric. He is fantastic! Very capable and polite. Super honest as well. He identified the problem as minor and quickly fixed it. The day before another electrician had proposed major and expensive repairs to fix the same issue.

Where GFCI Outlets Are Required in Chicago Homes

By both Illinois state law and the NEC, GFCI protection is mandatory in the following locations:

    ⚡ Kitchens (all countertop outlets)
    ⚡ Bathrooms (every outlet)
⚡ Laundry areas and utility rooms
    ⚡ Garages and accessory buildings
    ⚡ Crawlspaces and unfinished basements
⚡ Wet bars, sinks, and other plumbing-heavy spaces
    ⚡ Exterior outlets and receptacles

If your home is missing GFCI protection in any of these areas, it may be out of code, and unsafe.

    FAQs - GFCI Outlet Installation
Where do GFCI outlets need to be installed?
GFCI outlets are required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, crawlspaces, basements, laundry rooms, wet bars, and all exterior receptacles—anywhere moisture may be present.
Can I install a GFCI outlet myself?
DIY installation is possible, but mistakes can lead to serious hazards. For safety, reliability, and code compliance, it’s best to have GFCI outlets installed by a licensed electrician.
Do I need both GFCI and AFCI outlets?
Yes, in many cases. GFCIs protect against shock, while AFCIs protect against fire. Newer code often requires both in various parts of the home. We’ll help you determine what’s needed for full protection.
Do I need a permit to install a 240v outlet?
Yes, in most cases, especially in Chicago. Installing a 240-volt outlet often requires panel work and dedicated circuits, which need to meet city code and pass inspection.
