Spacing math for the room you actually have

The old rule-of-thumb — “one can every four feet” — leaves modern Chicago kitchens dim and living rooms glare-heavy. We use a foot-candle target (30-50 fc for kitchens, 10-20 fc for living/family rooms, 3-5 fc for hallways) and work backward from the room’s dimensions, ceiling height, and existing daylight. Fixture centerlines get plotted so you get an even wash without hot spots or dark corners, and can locations go onto a drawing so you know exactly where the ceiling gets cut before the drywall dust starts.

Ceiling types that change the job

Chicago’s housing stock is a mix: gut-rehab bungalows with new drywall ceilings, 100-year-old plaster-and-lath in Pilsen and Ukrainian Village, suspended drop ceilings in finished basements, and vaulted or coffered ceilings in newer builds. Each one changes the install: drywall gets standard new-construction housing pans (cleanest, fastest install); plaster & lath requires retrofit “remodel” cans with spring clips that clamp from below, plus plaster-safe hole saws to avoid crack propagation; drop ceilings take dedicated troffer-style LEDs designed for 2×2 or 2×4 grid drops; vaulted / cathedral ceilings need sloped-ceiling housings that keep trim flush with the vault angle so light points where you want it, not straight down.

IC-rated vs non-IC — and why it matters in Chicago

If you have blown-in cellulose, spray foam, or batt insulation above the ceiling — which most Chicago second floors and attic-adjacent rooms do — the housing has to be IC-rated (Insulation Contact). Non-IC cans in insulated ceilings are a fire code violation and a real fire risk. We spec IC-rated + airtight (IC-AT) housings by default for anything under insulation, which also stops attic air leakage into the room below.

Dimmer, color, and smart compatibility

Modern LED recessed cans are rated for dimming curves (0-10 V, ELV, phase-cut) that need to be matched to the right wall dimmer — put a $12 big-box dimmer on a premium LED and you get flicker, buzz, and a shortened driver life. We spec dimmer + fixture together, and can integrate Lutron Caseta or smart-switch systems so recessed lighting joins scenes or voice control without ripping open drywall later.

Remodel vs new-construction housings

If your ceiling is already up and finished, you want remodel cans — they clip in from below with retention springs, no attic access needed. If you’re gut-rehabbing or the ceiling isn’t yet drywalled, new-construction cans nail up to the joists first and give you a cleaner, more rigid install. We audit which type your job needs up front so we’re not surprised mid-cut.

How many recessed lights do I need for a room in Chicago?

Depends on foot-candle target and ceiling height, but a starting point: kitchens need 6-10 cans per 12×15 room; living rooms need 4-6; hallways get one every 6-8 feet. We spec the exact count on a drawing before install.

Can you install recessed lighting in a plaster ceiling without cracking it?

Yes. We use retrofit “remodel” cans with plaster-safe hole saws and back-cutting to control the plaster edge. This is the standard install for older Chicago homes in Pilsen, Ukrainian Village, Logan Square, and other pre-war neighborhoods.

Are LED recessed lights safe to install in an insulated attic?

Only if the housing is IC-rated (Insulation Contact). Non-IC cans in insulated ceilings are a fire code violation. We spec IC-AT (Insulation Contact, Air Tight) housings by default in every Chicago install where insulation is present.

Do you offer smart recessed lighting or just standard?
