Chicago’s housing stock is a mix: gut-rehab bungalows with new drywall ceilings, 100-year-old plaster-and-lath in Pilsen and Ukrainian Village, suspended drop ceilings in finished basements, and vaulted or coffered ceilings in newer builds. Each one changes the install: drywall gets standard new-construction housing pans (cleanest, fastest install); plaster & lath requires retrofit “remodel” cans with spring clips that clamp from below, plus plaster-safe hole saws to avoid crack propagation; drop ceilings take dedicated troffer-style LEDs designed for 2×2 or 2×4 grid drops; vaulted / cathedral ceilings need sloped-ceiling housings that keep trim flush with the vault angle so light points where you want it, not straight down.
If you have blown-in cellulose, spray foam, or batt insulation above the ceiling — which most Chicago second floors and attic-adjacent rooms do — the housing has to be IC-rated (Insulation Contact). Non-IC cans in insulated ceilings are a fire code violation and a real fire risk. We spec IC-rated + airtight (IC-AT) housings by default for anything under insulation, which also stops attic air leakage into the room below.
Modern LED recessed cans are rated for dimming curves (0-10 V, ELV, phase-cut) that need to be matched to the right wall dimmer — put a $12 big-box dimmer on a premium LED and you get flicker, buzz, and a shortened driver life.
